Dean Cliff Edwards has passed away
Posted Saturday, July 5, 2008 12:26 PM
PROFESSOR C H C EDWARDS
CM OM QC
1924-2008
Clifford Henry Coad Edwards, Dean-Emeritus of the Faculty of Law, died in his 84th year on July 5, 2008.
Professor Edwards, born in India and educated in England, practised as a solicitor in London, served as a legal advisor to missions in Nigeria and taught law at Kumasi College, Ghana. In 1958, he joined the small faculty of the Manitoba Law School, of which he became Recorder and later Dean. He led the transformation of legal education that saw the creation of the Faculty of Law as successor to the old law school, the development of its full-time programme and new curriculum, the recruitment of new faculty and the building of Robson Hall.
After resigning the deanship in 1979, he served until 2005 as president of the Manitoba Law Reform Commission. Professor Edwards was at various times president of the Canadian Association of Law Teachers, chair of the Canadian Council of Law Deans, a member of the Board of Governors of the University, a Manitoba representative on the Canadian Uniform Law Commission and a director of the Federation of Law Reform Agencies of Canada. His services to legal education and law reform were recognized by his being named Dean-Emeritus and by his appointments to the Order of Canada, the Order of Manitoba and the rank of Queen's Counsel. But teaching always remained Cliff's great love. His quite recent retirement from the University was only formal as he continued as a highly effective and much loved teacher in the School.Only a few weeks ago, he was hurrying before pending surgery to complete the annual revisions of his course materials and, as always, got the job done. His record of a half-century's service in our classrooms is one that almost certainly will never be matched. His students knew him as an outstanding teacher and wise counsellor and felt privileged his have him as a professor. Cliff felt privileged to have had them as students and to be able to help them forward in their careers. We remember Cliff with gratitude for his service, leadership and friendship and extend our profound sympathy to his wife Kathy, their children and their families, in their great loss.
A memorial service will be held at St. Aidan's Church, 274 Campbell Street, on Friday July 11, at 2:00 pm.

Welcome From the Dean
Welcome students, alumni, researchers, and friends of the University of Calgary Faculty of Law. The freshly-renovated Faculty, housed in Murray Fraser Hall, is one of the most central and technologically-sound buildings on campus. The stunning building renovations, increased student enrolment, expanded curriculum, and addition of new faculty members were all made possible via a realization of goals set in our 2003-2008 Strategic Plan. The Faculty owes much of its success to the generous donors who raised more than $20 million to make the facility and program upgrades possible. >> more
