Regent Law School Top 15 Forum Questions!

Dear Christian Milan ,

In case we missed you at the New York forum this past weekend, we offer the following information (most frequently asked forum questions) about our program at Regent Law School:

1. Describe Regent's average applicant pool.

Out of 6,000+ inquiries, approximately 688 applications were received for entry into the Fall 2006 entering class. Of this number, approximately 306 applicants were offered admission. 161 students began their studies in August. The average LSAT was 154; average UGPA was 3.3.

2. How would you describe the atmosphere at Regent Law School?

A spirit of cooperation and support is evident in the students and faculty. Because of the unique mission of Regent Law School, students pray, encourage and support one another. Professors genuinely care for their students, both professionally and personally. This positive environment is reflected in the excellent "Quality of Student Life" in the law school.

3. Does Regent's committee favor a particular type of personal statement?

The admissions committee places significant importance on the applicant's responses to the Regent-specific topics in the Personal Statement section of the admissions application. Such responses can provide the committee with insights into the applicant's motivation for studying law, his or her commitment to receiving a legal education that integrates Christian principles and ethics and knowledge of special skills and abilities developed through employment experiences.

4. Does Regent Law School accept optional and/or diversity statements? Does the School accept addenda such as optional essays or grade-explanation statements?

Applicants are welcome to submit addenda with their applications, including grade-explanation statements and LSAT-explanation statements. With regard to diversity, Regent anticipates a minority enrollment for Fall 2007 of 19%.

5. What opportunities does Regent offer for internships/externships?

The Career Services strategy is designed to meet the needs of law students in each year of study. The program includes individualized counseling, self-assessment, a general investigation of career opportunities and specific career search techniques along with assistance in professional development materials. A job bulletin board announces openings for internships, clerkships, associate positions and other law-related opportunities. It also promotes numerous judicial clerkships available nationwide.

6. What opportunities are available to prospective and/or admitted students to visit the Regent campus?

We encourage all prospective students to schedule a visit to our campus. We believe that a visit to the Regent community will reveal significant information about the mission of the school and your potential place within our community. The invitation to visit Regent is a standing one and can be geared toward individual schedules. A list of our "organized" program dates and chat nights can be found by visiting www.regent.edu/lawvisit

7. What is Regent's student-to-faculty ratio?

Our student-to-faculty ratio is 19 to 1.

.

8. Does Regent require a laptop?

While a laptop computer is not required, it can be an extremely useful tool. All classrooms are equipped with outlets for laptop use. High-speed internet access is available through the Law Library.

9. Does Regent provide academic support to students? Is it open to all students or only to students who are in academic jeopardy?

All students are invited to participate in the academic support services provided by the law school under the direction of Professor Natt Gantt. As a part of the application process, the Admissions Committee identifies selected students to participate in the Academic Success Program if those students possess a strong likelihood of success in law school, but would especially benefit from an extended orientation due to their LSAT score, undergraduate GPA, or other factors, such as their undergraduate major or the length of time since they have been enrolled in an academic program. The Summer Program is not a performance-based or trial admissions program. All participants are expected to continue with their studies in the fall semester.

10. Does Regent's financial aid package include merit-based and need-based aid?

The law school typically awards about $2.6 million. Our financial aid packages include merit, leadership, denominational and need/merit-based scholarships.

11. What scholarship opportunities are available to students after their first year?

Most first-year scholarships are renewable. Students who were not awarded aid their first year of study may qualify for aid their following years of study based upon their academic performance in the law school. The University also offers a number of endowed scholarships for continuing students.

12. What is Regent's first-year academic attrition rate?

Six students were academically dismissed at the end of their first year of study out of the 161 students who began in the fall 2006 incoming class.

13. What are Regent's strengths? What unique programs are offered?

The strengths of Regent Law School include the following: National Champions in the 2007 ABA National Negotiations Competition and the 2006 ABA Moot Court Competition among many others. Such successes reflect not only the high caliber of our students, but also the excellence in preparation provided by the Regent Law faculty and curriculum. Regent students also enjoy a strong sense of community and commitment to public interest. The accessibility and students relationship to faculty is a tremendous asset to our law students.

Each summer, Regent Law School hosts a program in Strasbourg, France, focusing on international law and human rights. Strasbourg students enroll in three, two-credit hour courses on Comparative Law, International Human Rights and the Origins of Western Legal Tradition. In addition, the law school has created a program with the Christian Legal Society to serve Christian law students and professors at other law schools.

Regent students also have the opportunity to participate in the Semester in D.C. program, which is housed directly across the street from the U.S. Supreme Court.

14. How do I strengthen my chances of being admitted?

The admissions committee evaluates each applicant's overall GPA, grade trends, the rigor of courses completed, the competitiveness of the institution attended, and comments from faculty recommenders as they relate to the applicant's performance, and future potential and extenuating circumstances that may have affected the applicant's college performance at the graduate level in addition to the undergraduate record. The committee carefully weighs each applicant's LSAT score in light of the many other parts of the applicant's admissions file in conjunction with the overall profile for the incoming class. Applicants scoring below 150 on the LSAT should plan to retest. The committee relies most heavily upon the highest score when an applicant has taken the LSAT more than once, but all scores will be reviewed. Applications from prospective students with LSAT scores above 150 and undergraduate GPAs above 3.0 are especially encouraged, as the law school has seen that such students are likely to succeed in law school and also likely to pass the bar exam on their first attempt.

15. What is the application timeframe at Regent Law School?

Applications for admission are accepted between October 1 and June 1, with a Priority Consideration date of February 1. Applicants may apply directly on the school website or via the LSAC e-app process. Further instruction and information may be found at www.regent.edu/law
