Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What is the school code for the FAFSA?
Our school code is 002785. It will appear as New York University.

2. What do I need to do as an applicant or admitted JD student in order to apply for financial aid?
Prior to admission, we encourage all applicants to complete and submit the FAFSA to our school code, 002785.
Upon admission to NYU School of Law, students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA, if they have not already done so, and complete our institutional application for financial aid, which is available through the Admitted Students website. Please contact the Office of Admissions if you are having difficulty logging in to the Admitted Students site. Admissions may be reached at by email at law.jdadmissions@nyu.edu or by calling 212.998.6060.
*Please note that NYU must receive the SAR electronically directly from FAFSA. Please do not send paper copies of the SAR to our office.
*Also, please note that we do not use the Need Access or other profile programs.

3. Is parental information required on the FAFSA or the institutional application?
NYU School of Law does not require parental information on the FAFSA.
However, in order to be considered for our institutional scholarship funding, regardless of age or marital status, parental information is required on our institutional application.

4. What are the deadlines for applying for financial aid as a JD student (i.e. submitting the FAFSA and the institutional financial aid application)?
Admitted students are strongly encouraged to complete both the FAFSA and institutional application by April 1. Students admitted after April 1 should complete the application as soon as possible and no later than two weeks after notification of their admission. If you do not complete the applications by the encouraged deadline, you are not precluded from receiving aid, however, priority will be given to applicants who met the deadline.

5. Do I need to send copies of my tax returns?
Please do not send copies of tax returns prior to our request from our office. We may request copies of both your and your parents' tax returns for verification purposes once an award has been determined. Please If you have already sent copies of the returns, please be advised that, for security purposes, these documents were shredded and may be requested from you at a later date.

6. When will I find out about my award? (JD applicants)
Notification of awards will begin in late-March early-April. Notification will be sent electronically via email to the address you listed in your completed financial aid application. Your award may be delayed if we need additional information from you during our initial review or if you are being considered for a named scholarship which requires an interview.

7. What do I need to do as a prospective LLM student to apply for financial aid?
LLM candidates are eligible to receive merit-based funding as determined by the Office of Admissions. There is no need-based funding from NYU School of Law for students pursuing an LLM degree.
LLM candidates are also eligible to apply for loans, both Federal* and private. The private loan process does not begin until June. In early-June we will have more information regarding the loan programs for next academic year.
*In order to be eligible for Federal loans, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and complete the FAFSA.
